Pathways to Academic Success Seminar

Welcome Students!

The Pathways to Academic Success Seminar (formerly Freshman Seminar) is a 2-credit elective class designed to help students make connections between what they are learning in their classes and current issues at the local, national, and global levels. Making these connections will help students see how what they are learning in the classroom can apply to the world outside the college setting.

During the semester, students in Pathways work on a culminating research project. Throughout this process students will:

  • Learn how to use the WSU library system
  • Understand current issues around the world
  • Analyze and evaluate how the issues are currently being addressed
  • Understand the connections that exist between General Education courses (GERs), and
  • Design and produce a project to communicate their research.
Pathways provides an opportunity for first- and second-year students to develop and create a culminating research project on topics stemming from and linked between the Common Reading and general education courses.  This connection provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to become involved in research at the beginning of their academic career.

All Pathways students will present their work in the form of a poster presentation during the end-of-semester Research Expo. The Pathways to Academic Success Research Expo provides an opportunity for students to hone their written and verbal communication skills through presentation and interaction with the campus community.

A Learning Community

The learning community in the Pathways to Academic Success Seminar brings together freshman and sophomore students, faculty members, and librarians in a collaborative, intellectually challenging environment where:

  • Students are supported in becoming successful members of the WSU academic community
  • Graduate Facilitators serve as leaders in the classroom and as an academic mentor to students in their first two years of study
  • Faculty members serve as intellectual role models
  • Librarians provide research expertise and personalized attention to each seminar

Washington State University's Pathways to Academic Success Seminar is a nationally recognized Learning Community.  Learn more about other resources geared specifically toward enhancing first year experiences in college:
